Favourite First Lines

These are some of my favourite first lines. Capturing the attention of the reader, setting the tone for the rest of the book, and using a lot of commas, apparently:

I Capture The Castle- Dodie Smith:

"I write this sitting in the kitchen sink."

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone- J.K. Rowling:

"Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much."

Pride and Prejudice- Jane Austen:

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."

Peter Pan- J.M. Barrie:

"All children, except one, grow up."

The Hobbit- J.R.R. Tolkien:

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit."

The Slow Regard of Silent Things- Patrick Rothfuss:

"When Auri woke, she knew that she had seven days."

Howl's Moving Castle- Diana Wynne Jones:

"In the land of Ingary, where such things as seven-league boots and cloaks of invisibility really exist, it is quite a misfortune to be born the eldest of three."

MinaLima's Peter Pan

The amazing graphic design team behind the Harry Potter films, MinaLima, have recently released a newly designed version of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan with Harper Design. This BEAUTIFUL book is full of the amazing unique touches you can expect from MinaLima, with ten 'interactive elements'. I saw the MinaLima team speak at LeakyCon London in 2012 and was absolutely spellbound by their work. The section of the Harry Potter studio tour dedicated to their packaging and print design is my favourite part of the whole tour. Looking through this book is a wonderful experience, the attention to detail is flawless. I haven't actually read through this copy yet, as I sort of feel it deserves to be placed in a glass box and viewed only while wearing white cotton gloves, but I probably will end up giving the book the full read through love I think it deserves.

Peter Pan illustrated by Mina Lima can be purchased on Amazon and prints of their beautiful designs can be found on their online store.
